Overview

Washington is located in the Pacific Northwest. It was named after the first president, George Washington, and officially entered the Union in 1889. Washington is the 13th most populous state despite being only the 18th largest, and one of the only states in which cannabis, same-sex marriage, and assisted suicide are legal. Unsurprisingly, about 60% of the state’s population resides in Seattle. The rest of the state is sparsely populated and leaves room for Washington’s many exports. It is a leader for the production of lumber; its mountainous terrain is rich in Douglas fir, hemlock, ponderosa, and white pine. Washington is also a heavyweight among the states for its agricultural production. It is the national leader in production of apples, lentils, peas, hops, pears, red raspberries, spearmint oil, and sweet cherries.
