Mississippi’s land was originally claimed by the French in 1699. It was then taken by the British during the French and Indian Wars and later ceded to the US after the Revolutionary War. The state was named after the mighty Mississippi, the 4th longest river in the world. Historically, the state’s economy was run by the cotton industry and agriculture in general. More recently, the state has expanded its manufacturing and industrial activity and now is a large producer of soybeans, corn, and peanuts, as well as the world's leading producer of pond-raised catfish.
