The western half was later bought in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, and the northern strip was later ceded by Britain in 1818. Minnesota didn’t become a state until 1858. The state is rich in natural resources and produces over 75% of the nation's iron ore. Its farms yield high amounts of corn, wheat, rye, and alfalfa. Minneapolis is the trade center of the Midwest and the headquarters of the world’s largest supercomputer.
