Maryland

Overview

Maryland is one of the original 13 colonies that formed the United States and has been home to notable residents such as Benjamin Banneker, Frederick Douglass, Thurgood Marshall, and Upton Sinclair. It was originally created as an intended refuge for persecuted Catholics from Protestant England. The Star Spangled Banner was inspired by the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore during the Revolutionary War. In 1791, Maryland ceded land to form the District of Columbia. Today, the state’s economy is thriving with agricultural products such as chickens, dairy, eggs, and soybeans. Chesapeake Bay also produces more seafood than any other similarly sized body of water. The state’s proximity to Washington, D.C. gives small businesses the unique opportunity to pursue plentiful government contracts.

Industry Stats

  • Couples spent an average of $1,928 on live band services for their weddings last year.

  • Maryland has 92,068 people who work in national security or international affairs. That’s about twice as many people as grocery store employees in this state.

  • More people work in computer systems design than real estate in Maryland.

  • For weddings in 2015, on average over twice as much was spent on the engagement ring as was spent on the wedding dress.

  • There is only one mental health doctor for every 215 people in this state.

  • $1.4 billion was spent on Maryland weddings in 2015.

Maryland is a good location for small businesses trying to obtain government contracts or tap into the strong labor market surrounding the District of Columbia. Small businesses also have a lot of community support due to Maryland’s "buy local" attitude towards products and services, which can help businesses just starting out tap into difficult markets.
