Overview

Maryland is one of the original 13 colonies that formed the United States and has been home to notable residents such as Benjamin Banneker, Frederick Douglass, Thurgood Marshall, and Upton Sinclair. It was originally created as an intended refuge for persecuted Catholics from Protestant England. The Star Spangled Banner was inspired by the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore during the Revolutionary War. In 1791, Maryland ceded land to form the District of Columbia. Today, the state’s economy is thriving with agricultural products such as chickens, dairy, eggs, and soybeans. Chesapeake Bay also produces more seafood than any other similarly sized body of water. The state’s proximity to Washington, D.C. gives small businesses the unique opportunity to pursue plentiful government contracts.
