Overview

The land which is now known as the state of Iowa was obtained in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. It didn’t fully become a state until more than forty years later, in 1846. The land is naturally divided by two huge rivers; the Mississippi River on the east and the Missouri and Big Sioux Rivers on the west side. Iowa is an agricultural powerhouse in the United States, producing around one tenth of the nation’s food supply. It is a national leader in corn, soybeans, and hogs. It also has a thriving manufacturing industry.
